The Red City

Home/Destinations/Marrakech

Marrakech is Morocco's most intoxicating city — a place where ancient medina life collides with world-class restaurants, rooftop riads, and the endless theatre of Jemaa el-Fnaa. The city's rose-red walls glow at sunset, earning it the nickname the Red City.

Top highlights

Jemaa el-Fnaa

The beating heart of Marrakech — a UNESCO-listed square that transforms from a daytime market into a spectacular evening carnival of storytellers, musicians, and food stalls.

Bahia Palace

A 19th-century masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship with intricate zellij tilework, carved cedar ceilings, and lush courtyard gardens.

Majorelle Garden

A botanical garden and artist's studio created by French painter Jacques Majorelle, later restored by Yves Saint Laurent. Famous for its vivid cobalt blue buildings.

Koutoubia Mosque

The largest mosque in Marrakech and the city's most recognizable landmark — its 70-metre minaret has inspired minarets across the Islamic world.

Medina Souks

A labyrinth of covered markets selling everything from hand-hammered lanterns and leather babouches to argan oil and Berber carpets.

Saadian Tombs

Rediscovered in 1917, these 16th-century royal tombs are decorated with exquisite Italian Carrara marble and intricate stucco carvings.

Insider tips

  • Hire a licensed guide for the medina — the souks are deliberately maze-like.

  • Visit Jemaa el-Fnaa at both noon and after dark for two completely different experiences.

  • Book riads well in advance — the best ones fill up months ahead.

  • Dress modestly when visiting mosques and the medina.
